Michael Cunningham
Michael Cunningham nasce nel 1952 a Cincinnati, nell’Ohio e cresciuto in California, a La Canada. Consegue il B.A. (Bachelor of arts) in letteratura inglese alla Stanford University e il MFA (Master of Fine Arts) alla University of Iowa. Nel 1990 pubblica il romanzo A home at the end of the world per Farrar, Straus & Giroux (trad. it. Una casa alla fine del mondo, Bompiani, 2003) ottenendo grande successo. Segue nel 1995 il romanzo Flesh and Blood (trad. it Carne e sangue, Bompiani, 2002). Nel 1999 riceve il Premio Pulitzer per la narrativa e il premio PEN/Faulkner per il romanzo The Hours (trad. it. Le ore, Bompiani, 2001). Nel 2002 esce il libro non romanzesco, Land’s End: a walk through provincetown (trad. it. Dove la terra finisce, Bompiani, 2006). Nel 2005 pubblica Specimen Days (trad. it Giorni memorabili, Bompiani, 2007)
Da The Hours è stato tratto il film omonimo, diretto da Stephen Daldry con la partecipazione di Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman e Meryl Streep. E’ stata realizzata la versione cinematografica anche del romanzo A home at the End of the world, diretta da Michael Mayer e interpretata da Colin Farrell, Robin Wright Penn, Dallas Roberts e Sissy Spacek. Cunnigham è co-autore, assieme all’autrice Susan Minot, della sceneggiatura del romanzo Evening, con gli attori Vanessa Redgrave, Claire Danes, Toni Colette, Patrick Wilson e Meryl Streep.
Pubblicazioni di Cunningham sono apparse in “The New Yorker”, “The Atlantic Monthly”, “The Paris Review” e in altre riviste. Il racconto White Angel è stato selezionato per Best American Short Stories 1989, un altro racconto, Mister Brother (trad. it Mr Brother, Bompiani, 2002) è stato pubblicato nel 2000 all’interno della O. Henry Collection.
